BEASTIE BOYS- TO THE 5 BUOROUGHS
album review by Jerry Horror
Tuesday, June 15, 2004

Three months ago I told two of my friends that the new Beasties record was gonna drop. You guys remember, in the mall, it was my one friends birthday, you guys laughed at me? Said the Beasties were old news, what were they like 80 years old?
You dorks were sleeping on the trio from Brooklyn that started it all. Thats right put down the hard earned cash, THE BOYS are back in town........

Six years. Six summers. Six LONG years. In 1998 The Beastie Boys dropped Hello Nasty. They did some benefit shows, a couple of special appearences, but, for the most part they were gone. Where did they go? What were the boys up to? If they did return, How well would they fare in this current musical climate? The wait kiddies, is over.....

The Beastie Boys new album is finally here. Guess what? It's stupid fresh. Iller tthan ill. Most of all it is a very triumphant return. The boys (now in their 40's) haven't lost a step. They are just as tight as Martha Stewarts ass in prison.

"To the 5 bouroughs", is a love letter to New York city, plain and simple. This is not a rap album, THIS is hip-hop at it's finest. Sonically it is completely diffrent yet, still the same as fans would expect. The production on this album is bananna's. Fans of turntablism and electronica take some notes.

The lyrical content ranges from the state of current U.S. politics to old school snaps on sucker emcees'. The boys have not lost it, they have perfected a style that is so often ripped off it, you don't even realize it. They were state of the art in 1986 and in 2004 you better believe they have gotten better like a fine wine. MCA in paticular uses some crazy ass metaphors, that NO ONE, could think of ryhming together. New school fans of underground, and old school heads who haven't been served in a long time are gonna be in for a treat. This is where it all started and most likely where it will all begin again. One listen of this cd will cement your love of hip hop and more so of (in my opinon) one of the greatest music groups of our generation all over again.

In short, if you dig the beasties, you MUST own this album, it is essential. It is the rip roarin' summer must have album. It will perk a party up right away. The whole album can be played sraight through, that is a testament of an artist's album. I highly reccomend this album, I Give it 4 out of four stars. Fuck it, if you don't cop this shit, don't consider yourself a part of the culture, hey you could always cop the new Lil' Jon album right? Wrong.
